1. How can I collect creative ideas to solve challenges with Be-novative?

In Be-novative, everything starts with a challenge. By starting a challenge in Be-novative, you can invite colleagues, friends, and communities to inspire each other and find solutions. Invitees can share and evaluate ideas in 30 minutes through a guided, digital workshop. You can always see the real-time results of the challenge, and once you decide to close it, you will have a list of all ideas ranked by the evaluations of participants. Then you can choose your favorite ones, send feedback, create projects out of ideas and more!

2. What is a challenge?

In Be-novative, everything starts with a challenge. A challenge can be a question you face in work or in life for which you need creative answers. The topic and thus the goal of a challenge can vary from developing an innovative project at work to finding the best present. By starting a challenge, you can invite colleagues, friends, communities to inspire each other and find solutions. In organizations, Be-novative is used mostly in product, process and organizational development. Some challenge examples: How can we build a culture of innovation in our local committee? What steps should we take to accelerate our customer service? How can we make our society more inclusive? What lifehacks do you know that I could use to make my home more eco-friendly?

3. Who can I invite for a challenge/to brainstorm with?

When you create a challenge, you can invite a group of people simply by adding their email addresses or you can choose to publish a "global" challenge which is visible for every registered user on the platform.

4. How can I start a challenge?

After you have logged in, click on the plus sign! You only need to fill in the details of your challenge and to click on create a challenge - it will be published immediately. We suggest to set a first group brainstorming time for invitees to kick off the challenge. Good luck!

5. How should I organize an online group brainstorming session?

First, click on the plus button to create a new challenge. When you fill in the details of your challenge, you can set a first group brainstorming time and date. Invitees will receive an email about the group brainstorming event so they will know when to join online. (Those who cannot join the group session can still participate in the virtual workshop another time until the challenge is open - Be-novative will replay the behaviors of previous brainstormers for them, so latecomers will get social inspiration, too.)

6. Do we have to join a challenge/brainstorm in the same time?/If I join a challenge alone, will I miss the group brainstorming?/I have missed the group brainstorming. Can I join later?

To get the best results, it is suggested to set one or more group brainstorming times when several participants join the online challenge together. However, Be-novative provides an opportunity to join a creative workshop not only from different locations but also in different times. Participants can join anytime until the challenge is open, and they will not be left alone in brainstorming rooms. Be-novative remembers the behavior of previous brainstormers and plays it back to those who join at an alternative time, providing the same social experience to them. Thus, if you join later than the group, you will still be able to share your ideas, get inspired by others, and evaluate.

7. How can I join a challenge?

All you need to do is log in to Be-novative, choose the challenge you would like to join and click on brainstorm! You will get into a virtual brainstorming room of four, where you can immediately start to share ideas. After brainstorming, go to evaluate and share your opinion about the ideas collected! That's it - the whole process takes maximum 30 minutes. After that, the challenge owner will get back to you about results and projects to be developed based on the outcome of the challenge.

8. I have joined a brainstorming room. What should I do now? / What happens during brainstorming in Be-novative?

Just sit back and focus on the question on the top of your screen. By clicking on the virtual brainstorming wall in front of you, you can start typing in your first idea about the question. Every time you click on the wall, a new idea box will appear and you can keep on sharing ideas. Your ideas will remain anonymous. Feel free to go crazy and share surprising solutions, but always keep in mind the essence of the question, the goal of the challenge and that others should be able to understand and evaluate your ideas later! During the 4 phases of brainstorming, you will get different inspirations to boost your creativity. Phases will move on automatically, or, in case you are the only real-time brainstormer, you can move forward from phase to phase yourself.

9. How long is a brainstorming session?

Generally idea sharing takes around 15 minutes. Immediately after brainstorming, participants evaluate ideas in 10-15 minutes. Thus together, the whole session takes around 30 minutes.

10. What should I do with the random words with blue background which appeared on my screen during brainstorming?

Play a little association game to spark your creativity and form new ideas! How? Choose one word, think about what associations come into your mind in connection with it, and try to come up with a new idea through associational steps. Do not worry if it does not work for you first - many times, associations work unconsciously. Did you know that the "Random words" is one of Edward de Bono's creativity enhancing techniques?

11. What is the next step after collecting ideas? / How should I move forward from brainstorming?

After you are done with sharing ideas, click on Go to evaluate (you might have to wait for a couple seconds until brainstorming time is up and the Go to evaluate option appears). Then you can evaluate ideas one by one - you can track your progress on the chart but you can also choose to evaluate all. Once finished, you can check the results of the challenge.

12. How does evaluation work?

In Be-novative, all participants take part in democratic, anonymous evaluation based on configurable criteria. They use an evaluation matrix, which by default has two axises: impact and feasibility. Thus, they have to think about how impactful and how feasible the ideas are. The axises can be personalized by the Challenge Owner. It requires only 10-15 minutes per participant to get a full, ranked list of ideas. The results of this crowdsourced evaluation can be immediately translated into the final result (by e.g. implementing the winning idea) or it can be used by the Challenge Owner as an input and basis for further analysis.

13. Can I set my own evaluation criteria?

Yes. When you create a challenge, you can modify the default criteria (impact, feasibility) and type in your own. Your criteria will appear on the axises of the evaluation matrix which participants use to evaluate ideas.

14. How many ideas should I evaluate? / When should I stop evaluation?

During evaluation, you can see 2 progress charts. The left one shows how many you have evaluated and how many you should evaluate, e.g. 9/25 if you have evaluated 9 and should evaluate at least 25. You can decide to stop and go to the results once you have reached 25, but you can always choose to evaluate more ideas than recommended, or even go through all! (The other progress chart shows the general status of evaluation in the challenge. It will reach 100% when all the ideas have been evaluated by at least 3 different participants.)

15. I have finished brainstorming and evaluation. What should I do now?

If you go to the results, you can see all ideas which were collected so far and their current ranking. You might want to check where your ideas rank and who are the top brainstormers. Later, the Challenge Owner will get back to you with the conclusion of the challenge, the selected ideas, rewards and the next steps towards implementation. Stay tuned!

16. How can I group and merge ideas?

Go to the results of the challenge after brainstorming and evaluation (or directly from the feed by clicking on Results on the challenge card). On the right, you can choose to launch your IdeaLab where you can group and merge ideas by dragging them from the pool and dropping them to the canvas and organizing them there. Use this option if you are a visual type and prefer to work on a virtual canvas online! If you prefer to work in Excel, can simply export the results of the challenge on the results page and start grouping offline.

17. How can I find out who is the idea owner?

Anonymity is key to unleash the creative potential of crowds. However, as a Challenge Owner (the one who created the challenge), you can send a request to Idea Owners to reveal their identity by marking their ideas as inspiring. Go to the results of the challenge after brainstorming and evaluation (or directly from the feed by clicking on Results on the challenge card) and use the star button next to the inspiring ideas to send personalized reward and a request to accept it. The Idea Owners will receive a request and you will be notified about the reveal of their identity.

18. Can I send feedback to participants?

As a Challenge Owner (the one who created the challenge), you can send both collective feedback and specific feedback for individual ideas. To send collective feedback, you can share your conclusion in a couple of sentences when you close the challenge. To send positive feedback and recognize some ideas separately, go to the results of the challenge after brainstorming and evaluation (or directly from the feed by clicking on Results on the challenge card) and use the star button next to the chosen ideas. Then you can use the feedback panel to choose a badge, write a message, send a request to the Idea Owner to elaborate on the idea or shortlist the idea to be prioritized.

19. How can I select the best ideas? How can I ask for more details about an idea?

As a Challenge Owner (the one who created the challenge), you can mark the best ideas and send feedback to and ask for more details from their owners. Go to the results of the challenge after brainstorming and evaluation (or directly from the feed by clicking on Results on the challenge card) and use the star button next to the chosen ideas. Then you can send personalized feedback to the Idea Owner and even ask him/her to create a detailed concept from the idea. The detailed concept can also be sent in Be-novative. All selected ideas will be highlighted on the results page and the Idea Owners will earn points for their outstanding ideas. They can also choose to reveal their identity and show that they shared on of the best ideas.

20. I received an email/notification that my idea was selected and I was asked to elaborate on my idea. What should I do?

Accept the request to take the next step towards the realization of your idea! By doing so, three things will happen. First, you will collect the reward for your inspiring idea and develop your character - congrats! Second, your photo will appear next to the idea and the Challenge Owner will know that you are the Idea Owner of this outstanding idea. Finally and most importantly, the system will guide you to a page where you can elaborate on your idea by sharing more details about it. After you have submitted your detailed concept, the Innovation Team will get back to you with the next steps.
